5 Reasons to Squirrel Away Beauty Favorites | by Ardith McCann

Enjoy connecting with Ardith by reading a new real life, down to earth post relating to beauty. Amy Miranda

As Amy has mentioned before, I am pretty much a minimalist when it comes to beauty products. I like my daily regime to be simple and relatively fast. I’m also a pragmatist when it comes to managing resources.

Of late I’ve noticed I’ve begun collecting backups to my most favorite skincare and makeup products…not unlike like a squirrel burying nuts in the Fall.

My 5 Reasons for Squirreling Away Beauty Favorites

  • Finite monthly budget
  • Economic shifts/downturns
  • Fear of formula change or product elimination
  • Fear of price hikes
  • Minimizing waste associated with testing products I likely will not use

The Products I’ve Been Collecting

  • Hada Labo Tokyo Gentle Hydrating Cleanser
  • Ponds Dry Skin Cream
  • Ponds Cold Cream
  • L’Oreal Paris Cosmetics True Match Super-Blendable Foundation Makeup
  • e.l.f powder blush
  • L’Oréal Paris Makeup True Match Super-Blendable Powder
  • L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Butterfly Mascara

While I want to be able to have access to my favorites over time, I do know there are limitations to just how much I can reasonably stash away.

  1. These products don’t keep indefinitely.
  2. I don’t have a limitless budget to work with.
  3. Storage space is a consideration.
  4. My skin and makeup requirements may well change over time.

That said, for the foreseeable future I want the peace of mind that comes with knowing I have what I need and when I need it.

Why These Particular Products?

With the exception of the dry skin cream and face powder, all of the products above have stood the test of time (the skin cream I just discovered and it is a life saver).

Like my mother before me, I have used Ponds cold cream since I was a teenager. It is the only eye makeup remover that keeps my eyelashes lush and long, my eyelids relatively wrinkle free. My cleansing cream of choice moisturizes my skin better than any other I have tried.

The L’Oreal foundation matches my skin tone beautifully, goes on smoothly and blends well. Plus, it actually helps keep moisture in my skin all day long. The e.l.f powder blush goes on easily and has impressive staying power.

As for the finishing powder, my new go-to version is the L’Oreal product listed above. For the price it is astounding. It is silky smooth to the touch, color matches perfectly, and makes my face look polished without looking powdery. And it lasts.

Finally, the L’Oreal Butterfly mascara is THE only mascara that looks great and doesn’t damage my eyelashes.

Product Collection Recommendations | What Matters Most

If you are like me and have some beauty favorites you want to collect, there are a couple of things I have learned that impact my specific selections. I’d love to hear what has worked for you.

When it comes to skincare products in jars, I believe smaller is better. First, small jars are a more hygienic choice. Second, it is easier to access product at the bottom of these jars. Third, small jars make travel (aka, road trip) packing a breeze.

Overall what matters most to me, and likely you as well, is the price/value ratio. The products I have curated have proven ROI. These are well made, deliver on their promises, perform well, give my sensitive skin zero problems, and are very cost effective. Frankly, I cannot ask for more.

For Now I Am Blissfully Happy

In the fickle world of cosmetics, I am painfully aware that product availability can be a fleeting thing and that I will likely need to expend time and money to find eventual replacements. In the meantime, I want to bask in the glow of my little treasure trove of beauty gold. It makes me so happy.
